Community comes together to help capsized boating business

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – Even with radar, forecasts, and alerts, the weather can be unpredictable at times out on the gulf because storms can move in fast.

For one local business, that reality nearly turned deadly.

Back Porch BBQ Food Truck was selling food on Shell Island when a friend called to say a storm was moving in faster than predicted. So the owners quickly rushed to return to shore, but were too late. The wind turned the boat upside down, with one of the owners still inside, damaging nearly everything.

Now, members of the community have started a GoFundMe campaign to raise $20,000 to help cover the cost. Stating they have done so much for the community, now it’s our turn to give back to them.

“They are so deep into the community with their support and helping people with Michael and feeding the community, feeding the homeless every time they have food that’s left over, they always give it to the homeless,” said Laura Mininno, the owner of Shell Island Ice Cream. “They are always feeding the captains for free, and me for free. They are always doing whatever they can to give back. So I think it’s important we support them in this time of need .”
