New York Liberty player Natasha Cloud has recently expressed her support for radical socialist Zohran Mamdani in the city’s mayoral race.

Cloud, known for her outspoken stance on political issues within the WNBA, celebrated Mamdani’s victory in the Democratic primary on Wednesday through various social media posts.

Cloud shared an X post quoting Mamdani, “We can be free, & we can be fed,” while tagging him. Earlier that night, she re-shared his celebratory post.

On June 18, Cloud re-shared a video from Mamdani about his reaction to accusations of anti-Semitism, expressing her endorsement for the self-identified democratic socialist.

“If I wasn’t a resident of PA, [Mamdani] is who would receive my vote,” Cloud stated.

In a conversation with a sports blog, Cloud shared that Mamdani’s primary win has rekindled her “hope in humanity.”

“He gets the worst PR because he’s a Muslim, he’s a socialist, and he’s a democrat. But he believes that it is the government’s right to ensure all constituents live dignified lives, regardless of background,” Cloud expressed.

“I believe it’s the right choice. What’s empowering is it restored my hope in humanity… the people will speak up, and there’s a lot of humanity left for us to care about one another.”

Cloud has become a polarizing figure in the WNBA, especially for her comments regarding former President Donald Trump.

Cloud seemed to react to the U.S. military’s actions on key Iranian nuclear sites, stating on X, “A sad sad day,” and “Grounds for impeachment.”

She later added, “I pi—d all the Republicans off again. It’s okay to admit y’all were wrong. Also, I feel it’s only right y’all enlist for the frontlines first. Not other peoples’ sons and daughters.”

In February, Cloud responded to Trump’s elimination of various government DEI programs.

“The systems of power are functioning as they were intended,” Cloud told The Associated Press. “It’s time to dismantle a system that has primarily served White men.”

Cloud expressed concern that the country prioritizes “money over people.”

“I understand both the business and human aspects,” she noted. “Too often, the human aspect is overshadowed by profit.”

Cloud reinforced her message in a subsequent social media post.

“I’m not soft, & words don’t hurt me lol. It still remains people over profit,” she shared on X. “If you’re genuinely about being unbiased… Google search international media coverage of what’s happening in America.”

“Then return and tell me the entire world is crazy.”

Cloud has also created controversy through comments involving WNBA star Caitlin Clark.

During a discussion on the “Pivot Podcast,” Cloud remarked on the uproar surrounding illegal hits against Clark, attributing the outrage to “racism.”

“It’s just a part of the game. There was no targeting. The narrative that the vets hate the rookies is all bulls—. If I’m being frank, it’s all bulls—. It’s racism,” Cloud asserted.

In a matchup between Cloud’s Liberty and Clark’s Indiana Fever on May 24, Cloud knocked the ball from Clark’s hands during the final possession. No foul was called, and Cloud’s team secured a two-point victory.
