HOWARD KURTZ: Trump survives assassination attempt, but political blame game remains persistent

The attempt to assassinate Donald Trump in Pennsylvania was a chilling and frightening event in a country that has witnessed too many such incidents.

We are thankful that the former president was not seriously injured and for the Secret Service agents who protected him.

I am grateful for President Biden, Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and other Democrats coming together to denounce political violence, wish Trump well, pray for him, and set aside partisanship.

Trump’s instinct to reassure his supporters by pumping his fist despite the blood on his face is also noteworthy.

There was also some ugliness following the shooting by the 20-year-old shooter that needs to be condemned.

Enough of blaming horrific shootings on left or right-wing figures to score political points. This cynicism must be called out.

While Trump escaped serious injury, one person in the crowd was killed. Let’s not indulge in blame games and sensationalism.

Even those who oppose Trump decried the assassination attempt, showing a brief moment of honesty and humanity.

PRESIDENT BIDEN DELIVERS REMARKS DAY AFTER ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON FORMER PRESIDENT TRUMP

The only person to blame in cases of shootings is the one who pulled the trigger. Our country has lost four presidents to assassins and two others have been injured.

What’s common among these assailants is their mental instability. Acting alone, they commit heinous acts that defy logic.

The killer in Pennsylvania, a registered Republican who also donated to a progressive group, left his motives unclear.

Statements from Biden, Trump, and others emphasized the need for unity and resilience in the face of violence.

The survival of Donald Trump serves as a reminder of the human cost of political conflicts.

Continued finger-pointing and gun control debates may not address the root causes of political violence in society.
