World Reacts to ICJ Ruling Against Israeli Occupation: Calls for an End to Impunity in Israel-Palestine Conflict

There has been a global response following a ruling by the top United Nations court that declared Israel’s presence in the occupied Palestinian territory as unlawful and called for its swift end.

Palestinian officials have praised the International Court of Justice ruling as a significant moment in their ongoing pursuit of justice. Israel swiftly denounced the decision, while the United States, its key ally, criticized the ruling after initially remaining silent.

Although nonbinding, the advisory ruling by the 15 judges concluded that Israel has no sovereignty rights over the occupied territory, has violated international laws against acquiring territory through force, and is obstructing the Palestinians’ right to self-determination.

The ruling also stated that countries are obligated not to support Israel’s presence in the territory.

Here is how various countries have reacted:

Australia

The government of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese affirmed its respect for the ICJ’s role in upholding international law and the rules-based order. It called for concrete steps from Israel to halt settlement expansion and respond to extremist activities.

Belgium

Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib emphasized Belgium’s commitment to upholding international law in response to the ICJ ruling.

Brazil

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted the need for a two-state solution with an independent Palestine living alongside Israel within the 1967 borders.

Bolivia

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged the UN and its member states to take action to stop crimes in the Gaza Strip and ensure Palestine’s right to self-determination.
