HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -This Independence Day holiday is shaping up to be one of the busiest for summer travel, especially in the skies.
According to AAA, around 5 million people are expected to fly during the holiday period.
“We actually expect that nearly 25,000 West Virginians are going to be flying over the Fourth of July travel period,” Lori Weaver Hawkins, AAA Bluegrass Public and Government Affairs Manager, said.
But travel-related stress can be felt throughout the summer.
To avoid delays and added stress, Hawkins recommended downloading the airline’s app, flying early in the day to avoid weather disruptions, packing light to sidestep baggage issues, and checking TSA requirements before packing.
“I typically say plan to arrive at the airport at least two hours before domestic flights, three hours before international flights, but when we get into these busy times, it pays to give yourself a little extra time at the airport,” she said.
Hawkins said if you’re traveling as a family, make sure your kids are prepared for the trip as well.
“I always tell parents to talk to your kids just about your trip in general,” Hawkins said. “Regardless of whether you’re going through the airport or you’re taking a road trip. Lay down some safety rules before you get to your destination because that’s when it’s more likely to sink in.”
Hawkins said if you’re taking a flight to a cruise departure, you should go the day before in case of delays.
