AMD Unveils New Radeon RX 9070 Series: Even Faster Than the 7900XTX

AMD has finally revealed full details of its new Radeon graphics cards, the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070. It claims the 9070 XT will be 42% faster on average than the popular RX 7900GRE and will actually be faster than the current flagship, the 7900 XTX in some games when ray tracing is enabled, which is a big surprise given it’s been playing down the 9070 XT’s ability to even match the 7900 XTX, never mind better it.

AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT And 9070 pricing

AMD will be announcing pricing follow the embargo lifting today and pricing details will be added here when they’re available.

AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT And 9070 Specifications

Both the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 will have 16GB of memory. The new cards use RDNA 4 compute units, which are up to 40% faster than RDNA 3 used in the 7000-series and offer double the raytracing throughput per compute unit thanks to third generation raytracing accelerators. For those concerned about power, the 9070 XT will have

How Fast Will The Radeon RX 9070 XT Be?

This has been a hot topic over recent months since AMD made it clear the new cards would not be competing for the top spot with the likes of Nvidia’s RTX 5090 or 5080. Instead as their name suggests, they would be competing with 4070 and 5070 tier models from Nvidia. However, during a recent press briefing, AMD said that the 9070 XT would actually be faster than its current flagship, the RX 7900XTX, albeit only in some ray tracing enabled games, while being a little slower in normal rasterization.

Starting with older graphics card comparisons and AMD claims the RX 9070 XT will be on average 51% faster than its popular RX 6900 XT, which was its flagship model two generations ago. For Nvidia owners, it will be 26% faster on average than the RTX 3090.

At a resolution of 2560 x 1440 in games, AMD’s own benchmarks point at an average 38% uplift over the RX 7900 GRE with the biggest gains being in ray tracing, although that card had a launch price of just $549.

Stepping up to 4K resolution and AMD’s graphs paint an even rosier picture with an average 42% uplift over the RX 7900 GRE across a range of game titles, again with the biggest increases being when ray tracing is enabled.

How Fast Will The Radeon RX 9070 Be?

Moving on to the cheaper Radeon RX 9070, and AMD claims that compared to models from previous generations that it will be 38% faster at 4K than the Radeon RX 6800 XT and 26% faster than the RTX 3080.

Compared to a popular card of last generation, namely the RX 7900 GRE, the Radeon RX 9070 is 20% faster on average with over 30% improvement in some ray tracing games at 2560 x 1440.

Finally above we have the average performance uplift for the RX 9070 at 4K resolution across a range of games compared to the RX 7900 GRE and here we see a 21% uplift and again several titles show over 30% performance improvement when ray tracing is enabled.

FSR 4 and HYPR-RX

AMD will also be introducing the latest version of its upscaling technology FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR4), which will be supported in over 30 games at launch and promises much improved image quality compared to FSR3.1. It will also be updating HYPR-RX, which is its driver-level performance enhancing feature that enables items such as FSR or Radeon Super Resolution where FSR isn’t supported in-game, Radeon Anti-Lag and Radeon Boost and in essence applies these for you.

When Can You Buy The RX 9070 XT And 9070?

Both the RX 9070 XT And 9070 will be available on March. 6 and AMD has claimed it’s been working with manufactures to ensure good stock of products in an effort to avoid the shortages and resulting high prices of of Nvidia’s recent launches.
