Scruggs, who beat Italy’s Alice Volpi in the semifinal, aimed to upset Kiefer for her first gold but settled for a silver medal.

The United States added two more medals, bringing their total to 12 in Paris. Kiefer’s win marks the third gold medal for the American team, joining the men’s swimming 4×100-meter freestyle team and swimmer Torri Huske as top prize winners in France.

Harvey claimed the bronze medal by defeating Volpi 15-12.
