An Amulet Depicting Prophet Solomon from the 5th Century Discovered in Hadrianopolis

Excavations in the ancient city of Hadrianopolis in the Eskipazar district of Karabük have uncovered a fascinating artifact dating back to the 5th century AD: an amulet depicting Solomon on horseback spearing the devil.

The ongoing excavation and restoration work in Hadrianopolis, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ersin Çelikbaş from the Department of Archaeology at Karabük University, is part of the Heritage to the Future Project by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

The ancient city, known for its mosaic floors depicting various animals in churches, is referred to as the “Zeugma of the Black Sea.” Important structures such as baths, churches, defensive walls, rock tombs, a theater, and more have been discovered in Hadrianopolis.

A Remarkable Discovery

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ersin Çelikbaş described the amulet as a significant find for Anatolian archaeology, explaining its symbolism and historical context.

“This pendant, serving as an amulet, features inscriptions and a powerful depiction. It portrays Prophet Solomon triumphing over evil, a theme present in all three major religions. The inscription ‘Our Lord defeated evil’ adds to its importance.”

The presence of this unique amulet in Hadrianopolis suggests its connection to the military history of the city, as noted by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çelikbaş.

“Our excavations have revealed evidence of a cavalry unit in the area. Solomon, known as a military commander, was likely revered as a protector by Roman and Byzantine cavalrymen in Hadrianopolis.”

The back of the amulet bears the names of holy angels, further emphasizing its spiritual significance and rarity in Anatolian archaeology.

“Similar artifacts have only been found in Jerusalem, highlighting Hadrianopolis as a significant religious center in antiquity.”

The amulet, dated to the 5th century AD, underscores the historical and religious importance of Anatolia.
