Arlecdon History Group Commemorates Local Heritage with Plaque Unveilings at Two Primary Schools

Arlecdon History Group, which has been researching and documenting the history of Arlecdon and Frizington, will come to an end, with their work, including several published books, serving as their legacy.

Over the years, the group has researched and written several books on the local area, including “Arlecdon – A Journey through Time” and “Frizington – From Iron-Ore to Hats Galore.”

The group also commissioned memorial plaques to commemorate important figures and groups from the area, including the miners of Frizington and Jack Adams, Arlecdon’s ‘famous son.’

These plaques have been installed at Arlecdon Primary School and Frizington Community School.

The group’s remaining members, Jean Birdsall, Bill Murray, and Avril Vout, have decided to end the group as its numbers have dwindled.

A spokesperson for the group said: “Sadly, our group numbers are dwindling, as members get older, so we decided earlier this year to commission First Image Signs, Lillyhall, Distington, to make these plaques.

“This would be our legacy, and they are duly displayed at Arlecdon Primary School and Frizington Community School.

“Shortly, Arlecdon History Group will come to an end, with the knowledge that, hopefully, we have put Arlecdon & Frizington on the map.”

The group has thanked all those who contributed in any way, whether by assisting with research, attending presentations, supporting book launches, or purchasing books.

They thanked all members of the group who have helped over the years, including former members Chris Carruthers, Matt Hawthorn, Cath and Ian Stockdale, Vera Moore, and Mervyn Dodd.

They said: “All of the aforementioned made valuable contributions to our group and to our books.

“Last, but not least, we mustn’t forget Maureen Fisher, who left the area several years ago for pastures new.

“It was under her guidance and inspiration that we published our books, which were all a great success.

“Finally, as we say our goodbyes, we’d like to extend a big thank you to all who, in some way, were linked to our group, whether it was helping with our research, attending our presentations, supporting our book launches, or just buying our books.”
