Austin Brown’s Quest for Redemption with the Panthers

LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) – Lufkin senior basketball player Austin Brown still has a goal to complete in high school before heading to Maryland to join coach Buzz Williams and the Terrapins.

Brown joined East Texas Now on Wednesday to talk about his commitment to the Terps.

“It’s been great. I’m very excited to make this big decision,” Brown said. “It’s been a lot leading up to it, but I’m just glad to make the decision.”

The 4-star shooting guard has been recruited by colleges for years now and says he has enjoyed the experience.

“It can get stressful, but you have to enjoy it. It’s a good problem to have,” said Brown. “It’s been fun just meeting and growing relationships with different coaches and different programs.”

Brown visited Maryland last week and immediately fell in love with the school.

“Everybody that we met was very welcoming. The places were great and the school was awesome,” Brown said. “It’s a great basketball school too. Seeing the whole place and getting to put a picture to the place was amazing and overall the whole visit was great.”

Williams was the head coach at Texas A&M and began recruiting Brown then. Williams was named head coach at Maryland on April 2 and continued his recruitment of Brown.

“He trusted me and saw my potential and what I could bring to his program,” said Brown. “Being around him and learning from him makes me a better basketball player on and off the court. Being around him makes you feel like a better man, and that’s who I want to spend my years in college with.”

The Lufkin Panthers racked up 34 wins last season, but fell in the second round of the playoffs. Brown says he and the team are motivated to make a deeper run this season.

“We had TABC this past weekend and we went 3-0. We had some younger guys step up and play big roles, so that was a great start to the season,” Brown said. “We’re looking to build off last season, keep growing, keep working with everybody and trying to be the best we can be and ultimately trying to win a state title.”
