Biden Informs Congress of Proposed $8bn Arms Sale to Israel, Reports Say amid Israel-Palestine Conflict

The Biden administration in the United States has informed Congress of a proposed arms sale to Israel worth $8 billion, as reported by US media. This sale comes as Israel continues its destructive conflict in Gaza.

The Department of State sent notification to the foreign affairs committees of the House and Senate on Friday. The weapons included in this sale will range from precision-guided munitions to artillery shells and air-to-air missiles. Some of these munitions can be supplied from existing US stock, while the majority will be delivered to Israel over time.

Previously, in August, an arms package worth $20 billion was approved by Washington, which included jets, military vehicles, bombs, and missiles. In November, another $680 million arms package was also approved, including small-diameter bombs and precision-guidance kits.

Despite some criticism, Biden has reaffirmed his support for Israel’s right to self-defense. The sale is expected to be approved by Congress, as there is strong bipartisan support for Israel within the US government.

Israel has faced accusations of committing acts of genocide in Gaza, with reports of the destruction of the healthcare system and widespread displacement of the population. The recent escalation of attacks in Gaza has led to a high number of casualties, with many civilians being killed.

Efforts are being made to negotiate a potential ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, with talks taking place in Qatar. The situation remains volatile, with ongoing violence and humanitarian concerns in Gaza.
