Bismarck’s Historical Legacy: A Journey Through City Hall

BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – The job of a city administrator comes with a lot of responsibility. Those who do it right must have a deep love of their community.

Bismarck City Administrator Jason Tomanek has lived in the capital almost his entire life and shares his love of the city through hundreds of pieces of historic memorabilia.

Tomanek showcases photos, postcards and paintings of historic Bismarck landmarks on the administration floor of Bismarck’s City Hall. Tomanek uses the collection as inspiration to move the city forward.

“I don’t see this town as ever becoming complacent. We are more diverse and constantly changing every day. Growing up here, I’ve watched this town become what it is, and I’m anxious to see what it looks like in the future,” said Tomanek.

Glimpses into history adorn Tomanek’s office in the form of paintings by local artist Richard Sprynczynatyk.

The watercolors showcase historic downtown landmarks like the Hoskins-Mayer flower shop in what is now the KFYR-TV complex. It also depicts the Grand-Pacific Hotel, which housed many politicians and business travelers and was torn down to become the present-day Wells Fargo and KLJ building.

There’s even a painting of the famous Patterson Hotel, where United States Presidents used to stay.

“Because I really don’t have a window in my office, I look at these and imagine them as being outside,” said Tomanek.

A few other highlights of Tomanek’s collection include a copy of a check to Asa Fischer—one of Bismarck’s first businessmen who built the old Governor’s Mansion—and many notable and promotional matchbooks highlighting the Prince Hotel and Bismarck’s Big Boy.

“Part of the fun is just going out and hunting for these things,” said Tomanek.

Tomanek said he plans to keep collecting and filling every open space he can find with Bismarck history.
