During the confirmation hearing, Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Calif., questioned Kash Patel, President Donald Trump’s nominee for FBI director, about his pro-gun beliefs.
When Padilla asked Patel about the constitutionality of background checks on firearm purchases, Patel replied that he wasn’t familiar with the details but believed it was supported by the Supreme Court.
“Do you think civilian ownership of machine guns is protected by the Second Amendment?” Padilla pressed.
“Whatever the courts decide regarding the Second Amendment is what is protected,” Patel answered.
Padilla raised concerns about Patel’s connection with Gun Owners of America, who endorsed him for the FBI director position.
“Gun Owners of America endorsed Patel, calling him ‘Fiercely Pro-Gun’ for the FBI Director role,” following Trump’s announcement.
Padilla expressed concern about Gun Owners of America’s extreme views on guns.
The organization believes all background checks are unconstitutional and that civilian ownership of machine guns is protected under the Second Amendment,” Padilla highlighted.
Padilla emphasized Patel’s role in overseeing critical gun regulations at the FBI, expressing doubts about his alignment with gun regulations.
