Candice Bergen Criticizes J.D. Vance at Emmys, Sparks Concerns About Her Well-Being

Candice Bergen made a bold appearance on Sunday night.

She chose to deliver her message in a more subdued manner.

During the 2024 Emmy Awards, the iconic actress surprised viewers and attendees by taking the stage to present the trophy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

This award is one that Bergen won five times for her role as news broadcaster Murphy Brown on the TV show of the same name.

Before announcing this year’s winner, Bergen made a sly comment about Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance, referencing a memorable moment from Murphy Brown.

“For 11 years, I had the tremendous privilege of starring in a comedy series called Murphy Brown,” Bergen said to an audience who gave her a standing ovation.

“In one iconic scene, my character faced criticism from Vice President Dan Quayle when Murphy decided to become a single mother to her baby.”

In a sarcastic tone, Bergen added:

“Oh, how times have changed… Nowadays, a Republican VP candidate wouldn’t criticize a woman for having children.”

The actress concluded her joke with a “meow,” alluding to J.D. Vance’s controversial 2021 remarks about “childless cat ladies.”

Bergen’s joke made headlines, not just for its content, but also for her delivery.

Many viewers noticed her slow and deliberate speech, leading to speculation about her health and well-being.

A significant detail to consider is that Candice Bergen is 78 years old.

Another important point is that she suffered a stroke in 2006.

While this was many years ago, Bergen mentioned in 2012 that the stroke affected her memory, which was never the same after the incident.

“The truth is, I don’t look like I used to,” the actress stated at the time. “But I just don’t care enough, and in a way, it’s liberating.

In her 2015 memoir, Bergen reiterated this sentiment, simply stating:

“Let me be clear – I am overweight.

“In the last 15 years… I’ve gained 30 pounds. I enjoy eating. I don’t subscribe to the ‘eat to live’ philosophy.”

At 78 years old, Bergen continues to bring laughter to audiences and overall, is doing quite well.

The same can’t be said for J.D. Vance.
