Celebrating 34 Years of Chihamba: A Vibrant African Culture Festival in Charlottesville

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – The Chihamba festival is back and it’s celebrating 34 years of African American culture in Charlottesville.

This year it was hosted at Burley Middle School and became the hub of music, food, fashion, and pride. Vendors and musical guests showed off handmade goods and traditional wear rooted in African heritage.

One shop owner says, African culture needs to be implemented more in Charlottesville, and there’s always more to learn.

“It’s everything about the culture,” said Fatima Boamah with African Market Place of Charlottesville. “Our motto is home away from home. So, we try to bring African-American culture to our community.”

The marketplace is located on 1901 Commonwealth Dr.

The festival is set to return next year.
