DIAMONDHEAD, Miss. (WLOX) – Kids at the East Hancock Public Library spent Friday morning celebrating a famous green icon – Kermit the Frog.
Every Friday in June, the library’s ‘Art in Mississippi’ summer camp teaches children about artists who shaped the state’s culture. Today’s lesson honored Jim Henson, the Mississippi native who created the Muppets.
“We made sock puppets that were inspired by Jim Henson. Today we also celebrated Kermit the Frog’s birthday,” said camper Audrey Webb.
Camp volunteer Kathryn Lewis said the program combines creativity with education.
“So it’s hands-on, interactive, fun learning – it’s everything we want a child to experience,” Lewis said. “They actually create something that’s their own, from their own imagination and creativity. Those geniuses we had in Mississippi as artists did things very similar to that.”
Campers used their imaginations to bring puppets to life – some giving their creations unique personalities.
One camper giggled, as her puppet said, “I want to thank Avie for making me.”
Another camper showed off his puppet and said, “He’ll be able to sew,” explaining that sewing skills could mean “free clothes” in the future.
Campers don’t need to bring materials, and the library plans to host a new themed camp next summer.
