SSDs are becoming increasingly smaller, and at CES 2025, one company was proudly showcasing their claim to have the “world’s smallest portable” solid state drive. Planck from ShiftCam definitely lives up to that title.
Planck is a compact rectangular dongle that conveniently attaches to the bottom of the iPhone via USB-C. Unlike traditional flash drives with connectors on the shorter side, Planck’s connector is positioned in the middle of the device, seamlessly blending with the iPhone’s shape when plugged in.

I was impressed by how slim the Planck is. At first glance, it resembled an SSD card reader, but in reality, it is a fully-functional solid state drive.
The Planck is designed to assist content creators in leveraging the iPhone’s camera capabilities, especially for shooting high-quality Apple ProRes video in 4K. Since these videos consume significant storage space, having a removable SSD with up to 2TB of storage will be a significant upgrade for those working with large amounts of data.

ShiftCam, the creator of Planck, specializes in user-friendly iPhone accessories for content creators. From stands to ring lights and a portable dock and charger known as SnapGrip, ShiftCam offers a range of products tailored for mobile content creation. An SSD designed for content creators aligns perfectly with their target audience.
What sets Planck apart from ShiftCam’s other products is that most of their trademark items incorporate MagSafe for easy attachment. However, considering ShiftCam also produces camera lenses for the iPhone, Planck is not the first departure from their existing product line.

The company also has plans to introduce a USB-C hub to allow users to connect multiple Planck drives to the iPhone simultaneously.
Planck will be launched at a special price of $125 for the 1TB model and $199 for the 2TB model during an upcoming crowdfunding campaign.
