Chicago mayor maintains stance against Trump administration’s immigration reform

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, on Sunday, reaffirmed his commitment to opposing President-elect Trump’s plan to remove dangerous illegal immigrants accused of crimes from the U.S. once he resumes office on Monday.

The mayor’s office has assured that the city will continue to follow the 2017 Illinois Trust Act, which prevents local law enforcement from participating in federal immigration enforcement.

Mayor Johnson’s unwavering opposition was made clear on Sunday.

“Chicago remains steadfast: our dedication to protecting and supporting this city will not falter,” Johnson wrote in a social media post. “We will persist in advocating for the justice and safety of all residents.”

The mayor also reiterated remarks he made after Trump’s election victory in November.

In a video clip lasting almost a minute and ten seconds, Johnson pledged to defend the people of Chicago, warning that Trump’s threats target not only new immigrants and undocumented families, but also African American families.

He accused Trump of seeking to dismantle public education and limit opportunities for descendants of slaves.

“We will stand up and protect undocumented individuals,” Johnson declared. “We will support Black, brown, Asian individuals… The hostility in this political climate is unacceptable and dangerous.”

“Whether it’s anti-Black or anti-Semitic, we will safeguard people and invest in them,” Johnson added. “Chicago will thrive, with or without the current White House administration.”

Johnson’s office did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

Earlier this month, Johnson issued guidelines on how to handle visits from U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to city properties.

Johnson’s guidelines instruct, “Contact your agency or department’s designated attorney or general counsel for further guidance. Contact the highest ranking official or designated supervisor onsite and do not take any action until that person arrives.”

The guidance includes demanding copies of warrants, not allowing ICE entry into private or sensitive areas, and not obstructing searches, even if denied. It also recommends taking notes and maintaining written records.

Despite pleas from residents about limited resources, tens of thousands of illegal immigrants reside in Chicago. Since August 2022, over 20,000 migrants have arrived in the city, with thousands in shelters.

Sheltering migrants has drawn criticism, costing the city $574.5 million since August 2022. At a recent city council meeting, residents objected to a $60 million property tax increase proposed to address a $1 billion budget shortfall by the end of the previous year.
