Harry Litman, former senior legal columnist for the Los Angeles Times, announced his resignation this week, accusing the paper’s owner of “appeasing” President-elect Donald Trump.
Speaking on MSNBC, Litman criticized the Times for not confronting Trump’s threat to democracy under owner Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong’s less partisan stance. He stated, “I think they cowered and are worried about their personal holdings and just being threatened by Trump. And that’s a really shameful capitulation, I think. So, I just felt I couldn’t be a part of it and had to resign.” This echoes sentiments he expressed in a recent Substack article.
Soon-Shiong, who purchased the Times in 2018, caused controversy when he announced the paper would not endorse a candidate in the 2024 election. This decision challenged the Times’ history of endorsing Democratic candidates.
