  • Danny DeVito teased the forthcoming Golden Bachelor crossover episode from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s season 17, premiering on July 9 at 9 p.m. ET on FXX
  • The actor told PEOPLE there’s “just insane stuff going on” and that the cast “had a ball doing it”
  • DeVito also teased how he thinks he would fare if he were to go on the reality dating show

Danny DeVito is ready for his It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia character, Frank Reynolds, to look for love on the show’s Golden Bachelor crossover episode, as teased in the season 17 trailer.

Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at PaleyLive’s It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia 20th Anniversary Celebration in Los Angeles on Tuesday, July 1, the 80-year-old actor teased that the forthcoming episode has “just insane stuff going on.”

“We had a ball doing it. They write such great stuff,” he said, praising the show’s writers. “If it’s not on the page, it ain’t on the stage.”

DeVito revealed that the episode is also a mini Taxi reunion for him and Carol Kane.

“We got to work with Carol Kane. Carol Kane is our favorite,” he gushed. “She’s part of the zeitgeist at the moment, and I love her so much.”

“I’ve been working with her since Taxi, which is 50 years ago, if you’re counting,” he added.

DeVito played Louie, the head dispatcher of the Sunshine Cab Company, for the entire five-season run of Taxi, which aired between 1978 and 1983.

Kane played Simka — the eventual wife of Andy Kaufman’s Latka — who was first introduced in season 2 and became a full-time cast member by the final season.

The Taxi cast reunited earlier this year to honor DeVito.

Given that his character Frank goes on The Golden Bachelor, DeVito weighed in on how he thinks he would fare if he went on the reality dating show.

“It’s about getting laid, right?” he asked. “That’s the whole idea. Get some.”

The actor said he “didn’t know” if he could do it, but if he did, he’d “have to have doctors’ assistance” throughout the process.

“A little old boost every once in a while. It would be a trail of blue pills, you know what I’m saying?” he laughed. “This is terrible.”

DeVito has been married to Cheers alum Rhea Perlman since 1982, though they’ve been separated for years and have never divorced.

PEOPLE also spoke to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Charlie Day, who said he “couldn’t believe” ABC let them bring The Golden Bachelor into their show.

Day, who plays Charlie Kelly on the sitcom, said there were no off-limits stipulations from the network.

“No, that’s the thing that really surprised us,” he recalled. “They sort of said, ‘You guys can do what you want.'”

Part of being given carte blanche included bringing Bachelor franchise host Jesse Palmer into the action.

“He’s great. He was great,” Day teased of Palmer’s performance. “He was game and willing to go for the big jokes, and he was really good in the episode.”
