Fighting
- A drone attack on a home in Russia’s Belgorod region resulted in the tragic deaths of a woman and her two-year-old child, according to Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov. Additionally, the attack injured two individuals and the Russian Ministry of Defence reported destroying 104 Ukrainian drones overnight. Amidst the drone attacks, one man sustained a “non-penetrating chest wound” and several buildings and cars were damaged.
- In a retaliatory measure, Ukraine’s military claimed to have shot down 29 out of 57 drones launched by Russia in an overnight attack. Kyiv also stated that Russia launched an Iskander-M ballistic missile during the conflict.
- Ukraine countered with a strike on an oil refinery in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region, triggering a large fire. In addition, an oil leak and fire were reported at Russia’s Andreapol oil pumping station due to a Ukrainian drone strike. Further, a missile storage facility was targeted in the Tver region, resulting in a series of explosions.
- Kyiv experienced an air raid alert for half an hour as a destroyed Russian drone dropped debris near a metro station in the Darnytskyi district. In another development, Russian forces reportedly took control of the Novoielyzavetivka village in east Ukraine’s Donetsk region.
Kursk incursion
- The AFP news agency reported that Russian officials held discussions with relatives of civilians trapped in the Ukraine-occupied Kursk region, amidst criticism and appeals for the return of their loved ones.
Russian oil and gas
- The European Commission decided against banning Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) in its latest sanctions, opting instead to restrict Russian aluminium, video games, and joysticks. Member states expressed concerns about securing alternatives before imposing the ban.
- Moldovan gas supplier Moldovagaz agreed to resume gas deliveries to the separatist enclave of Transnistria, with an initial delivery of 3 million cubic metres of gas on credit.
Politics and diplomacy
- Australian national Oscar Jenkins, previously reported killed by Russian forces, is confirmed to be “alive and in custody,” according to Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong. However, concerns remain for his well-being as a prisoner of war.
- Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on US President Donald Trump to support Kyiv, emphasizing the importance of justice and broader security guarantees for Ukraine. Zelenskyy also criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for his lack of fear towards Europe.
- Western officials cautioned Ukraine about potential trust issues stemming from internal feuds within the country’s defense ministry and procurement divisions.
