The Las Vegas Raiders have terminated both head coach Antonio Pierce and general manager Tom Telesco this week.
Is former NFL star Deion Sanders interested in filling one of these vacancies?
There’s a chance. Sanders, the current head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, reportedly “has a very strong interest in the [head coaching] job.” Sanders’ representatives have contacted the Raiders to express interest, but it’s uncertain if the feeling is mutual, according to the report.
Under Sanders’ leadership, the Buffaloes achieved a 9-4 record this season after a 4-8 season in 2023. Sanders previously coached at Jackson State, where the team had a combined 27-6 record from 2020-22.
Sanders coached his sons, quarterback Shedeur Sanders and safety Shilo Sanders, at Colorado over the past two seasons. The Pro Football Hall of Famer also coached Shedeur at JSU and in high school. Sanders mentioned earlier this week that the “only” scenario where he would consider coaching in the NFL is if he could coach both of his sons.
The Raiders finished the previous season with a 4-13 record, going 9-17 under Pierce since he became interim head coach in 2023. Telesco was fired after just one season in the role.
Deion Sanders says he would consider the NFL to coach Shedeur and Shilo
Las Vegas has a long-term need for a quarterback and holds the sixth overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft; Sanders is arguably the top quarterback prospect in the upcoming draft. However, the Tennessee Titans (No. 1), Cleveland Browns (No. 2), and New York Giants (No. 3) also require a long-term quarterback, so the Raiders might need to trade up to acquire Sanders.
The Raiders have requested interviews with Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken, former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh, and former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll for the head-coaching position.
