Democratic Representative urges party members to collaborate with Trump

Rep. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., started the new year by sharing his thoughts in a New York Times guest essay, calling on fellow Democratic lawmakers to cooperate with President-elect Donald Trump for his second term.

In his piece, Suozzi acknowledged that the outcome of the 2024 election indicates a desire from voters for the Democratic Party to engage in compromise on key issues like the economy and immigration, rather than obstructing Trump’s agenda as they did in his first term.

“As a Democratic member of Congress, I know my party will be tempted to hold fast against Mr. Trump at every turn: uniting against his bills, blocking his nominees and grinding the machinery of the House and the Senate to a halt. That would be a mistake,” he stated.

Suozzi, newly elected to New York’s 3rd Congressional District, expressed skepticism regarding Trump’s willingness to cooperate with Democrats, highlighting concerning actions post-election.

“I’m no dupe: Some of Mr. Trump’s actions offer little reassurance that he is ready to embrace the bipartisanship and compromise essential to a functioning democracy,” he said, pointing to Trump’s “radical cabinet picks,” demands for the recent spending bill, and his connections with Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy.

Suozzi emphasized the need for Trump to negotiate with the opposing party and encouraged Democrats to meet halfway for progress, rather than simply opposing.

He further criticized his party’s shift to the left and advocated for bipartisan solutions over political gridlock.

Regarding Trump’s victory, Suozzi clarified that it wasn’t a mandate for one-party dominance but for issues like border security, immigration reform, economic stability, and finding common ground on societal disputes.

Suozzi gave examples of Democratic compromises, mentioning climate change and the need to balance environmental protection with practical measures to maintain affordability.
