Congressional Democrats are striving to maintain a balance between standing firm against President Trump and expressing a willingness to collaborate with him where feasible, following his assumption of office as the Republican leader.
Moderate Democrats and those in vulnerable seats have extended gestures toward Republicans in areas such as border security and transgender youth after the GOP’s dominant wins in the 2024 elections, perceived by the right as a call for a more conservative America.
“My priority is to advocate for the well-being of Texas families, and I am open to collaborating with any individual, regardless of party affiliation, who aims to reduce costs, secure our borders, and ensure community safety,” stated freshman Rep. Julie Johnson, D-Texas, who was present at the inauguration.
“However, I will always oppose President Trump, his administration, division, and far-right extremism if they jeopardize our way of life.”
DONALD TRUMP SWORN IN AS 47TH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., who faced close contests in 2016 and 2022 and is anticipated to do so again in 2028, declared, “I am eager to collaborate with the new administration to lower costs, generate employment, and maintain community safety. Yet, if President Trump’s actions harm hardworking Nevadans, I will vigorously defend them.”
Rep. Jimmy Panetta, D-Calif., struck a similar conciliatory tone.
“Progress can be made on various fronts such as housing, environmental conservation, public safety, immigration reform, national security, and more. I am willing to work with any individual or administration to pursue common ground and effectively serve the people I represent,” he remarked.
“I firmly believe that our unity is our strength, empowering us to overcome various challenges. Immigrants abiding by the law, the LGBTQ+ community, women, and families recovering from catastrophic natural disasters are understandably concerned about the campaign rhetoric and potential policies of the Trump Administration,” stated.
Some Democrats presented more cautious statements, such as Rep. Chris Deluzio, D-Pa., who commented on X, “Today, and always, I wish [President Trump] success as he embraces the responsibility of leading our nation.”
