HomeHealthDIY Hair Oil for Nourished Locks

DIY Hair Oil for Nourished Locks

Hair can become dry and brittle, particularly in the summer months when spending time outdoors. This can happen at the beach or while swimming in a pool with chlorine. Additionally, using harsh hair care products can lead to damage such as frizz, breakage, and hair loss. This DIY hair oil treatment is designed to enhance scalp health and promote healthier, more natural hair.

I appreciate that this treatment is cost-effective and simple, making it suitable for all hair types. I even used this hair care routine on my 4-year-old daughter in the past to help manage her hair. Not only did it make her hair easier to brush, but it was also gentle on her delicate scalp. While this “recipe” is straightforward, I wanted to share it because of its effectiveness!

After using this treatment, your hair may feel oily, so make sure to shampoo and rinse thoroughly!

DIY Hair Oil

I have another DIY hair growth oil recipe that doubles as a conditioner, stored in a dropper bottle. This rosemary hair growth oil differs from the DIY hair oil mentioned here, as it serves as a deep conditioning treatment. Both options are beneficial for thick hair and scalp health!

This hair treatment utilizes natural oils to improve dry hair and has become a regular component of my hair care routine. It helps reduce hair fall, nourishes hair follicles, and may even aid in treating dandruff. The DIY hair oil includes Epsom salts rich in magnesium, along with conditioning olive oil and coconut oil for a healthy shine.

I’ve also added raw honey to the mix due to its unique hair-enhancing properties. Raw honey stimulates skin cell growth on the scalp, moisturizes, and delivers essential nutrients to the hair and scalp. Additionally, honey possesses natural antimicrobial and antifungal properties, making it effective for combating dandruff.

Here’s how to make it!

DIY Hair Oil Recipe

This simple and affordable homemade hair oil is designed to naturally improve dry, brittle, damaged hair. Make this luxurious scalp massage a regular part of your skincare routine!

  • Combine all of the ingredients in a bowl and blend well with the immersion blender. If you don’t have a blender, or your ingredients aren’t combining well, then heat the ingredients (except for the essential oil) over low heat on the stove. Whisk to combine as the ingredients warm. If not using the stove, then the Epsom salt may still be somewhat gritty. It will dissolve and work into the hair once it’s applied.
  • Add the essential oils to the warm oil if using.

  • Stir or shake the mixture well right before applying. Over a sink or shower, massage the warm (not hot!) oil treatment through the hair and scalp.

  • Put a shower cap on (or old towel) and leave the oil blend on for up to 30 minutes.

  • Rinse the oil off in the shower then shampoo.

  • If hair is still oily after washing, massage a small amount of baking soda through the hair to remove or use dry shampoo after the shower.
  • If you have really long hair you may need to double or triple this recipe.
  • Some people have the opposite effect from coconut oil and it gives them dry hair. If so, then use more olive oil, or another carrier oil instead. See the section below for substitute ideas.

Ingredient Substitutions

I frequently use olive oil and coconut oil in my homemade skincare and hair care recipes due to their omega fatty acids and other beneficial properties. However, some individuals find that coconut oil dries out their hair or skin. In such cases, other carrier oils can be used as substitutes. Consider using sweet almond oil instead of olive oil for a less oily option. Avocado oil is also a highly nourishing choice for hair.

Incorporating jojoba oil, castor oil, or argan oil into the mix can also benefit your scalp. Additionally, adding some vitamin E, which contains antioxidants, can promote hair growth and scalp health.

Optional Essential Oils

While not essential, you can include some essential oils in your DIY hair oil for additional benefits. Since essential oils are highly concentrated, only a few drops are needed. It is important to dilute them properly and avoid using them on young children.

Consider adding rosemary essential oil for promoting hair growth. Cedarwood and lavender essential oils are also known for their hair growth benefits. Tea tree oil is effective for treating dandruff, while peppermint essential oil provides a cooling and invigorating effect. Just be cautious to avoid contact with your eyes!

This DIY hair oil is a fantastic way to give your hair some extra care and attention!
