Donation Sparks Hands-On Science for Waverly’s Young Learners

WAVERLY — Waverly Primary’s fourth annual Tiny Tigers Science Day got a boost this year from Fluor-BWXT Portsmouth (FBP).

According to an announcement, FBP donated $1,500 to the school, which was used to buy supplies for high school students to conduct hands-on science activities with preschool through second-grade students.

“We always value supporting local students in learning more about the sciences,” said FBP President and CEO Greg Wilkett. “Sometimes these projects can make a huge impact on career choices in the future.”

Preschoolers and kindergartners learned about chemical reactions by making slime, while first and second-grade students explored rocket design and the importance of trajectory and drift during launches.

“This was an opportunity for my high school students to collaborate and positively influence the Tiny Tigers,” Waverly High School Science Teacher Daniel Sand explained in the announcement. “I was impressed with how well my students worked with the kids, and some of them even talked about future career plans.”

Waverly Primary Principal Sarah Ward expressed gratitude for the donation.

“We are grateful for the funding provided by FBP that allowed us to expand the Tiny Tigers project from simple to more complex activities,” Ward said.

FBP provides thousands of dollars every year to support STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) related programs in Pike, Ross, Scioto and Jackson counties.
