Exciting Upcoming Entertainment Events in Sonoma Valley

Music in Place Sonoma Sundays

The Music in Place concert this coming Sunday, July 27 is number seven of 16 free shows produced by the local nonprofit, and will feature The Music in Place All-Stars. This choice group of musicians is comprised of Aaron Lington, musical director and playing the Baritone Sax, Michael Henning on drums, Scott Thompson on bass, and Howard Paul playing guitar. Also, a group of invited “friends” will skillfully augment the combo.

Theirs will be a slick program of jazz, funk, fusion, and reimagined pop tunes. As usual, the free show kicks off at 2 p.m. in Grinstead Amphitheater on the Sonoma Plaza.

Beverages are available for purchase, Music in Place apparel is offered for sale, and the venue is superb. Early arrival, and a seat cushion of some sort, is recommended to fully enjoy the show.

Gun Bun’s Bright Eyes

Gundlach Bundschu is presenting the hugely popular indie act Bright Eyes in concert on Wednesday, Aug. 27 in their beautiful amphitheater. Presented by (((folkYeah!))), the show will begin at 7 p.m., just as the sun is dipping below the western hills.

Bright Eyes will play Sonoma on the second day of an eight-date mini-tour of the western states before hitting the road for an impressively extensive tour beginning in mid-September. The band is promoting a new album they have called “Five Dice, All Threes.”

A portion of the proceeds of the tour and the sales of the record will go towards a project they have created called the Poison Oak Project. The story of the project is explained in great detail on their website, thisisbrighteyes.com. It appears that Bright Eyes is a very outspoken, very political band, taking quite a stand against the Trump Administration. Band leader Connor Oberst penned a scathing statement explaining his stance.

Artists take chances with their art. Oberst is taking chances with this stance. Good for him.

Tickets can be purchased at wl.seetickets.us. or by visiting gunbun.com

Gundlach Bundschu is located at 2000 Denmark St.

The Blues Project at EVI

Mark your calendars for a great opportunity to see and hear an iconic, historic rock band play here in our little town. The Blues Project, represented by original member, drummer Roy Blumenfeld, will play the intimate El Verano Inn on Sunday, Aug. 31 for a 7 p.m. show.

Blumenfeld is using this show to raise awareness of and funds for local radio station KSVY. He is donating a generous portion of the door to the station, one he calls “an important part of our community, and a great radio station, too.”

Appearing with him will be Tim Eschliman on vocals and bass, Glen Ellen’s Dave Aguilar on vocals and guitar, Mark Newman on vocals and guitar, and Ken Clark on vocals and keyboards.

El Verano Inn is located at 705 Lauren Ave.

Kitchen Concert

The next Kitchen Concert at the Sonoma Community Center will be this Sunday, July 27. Performing will be Deborah Kinney, Merritt Booster, and Margaret Hatcher.

The three women have been friends for many years and have long enjoyed making music together. This show will be a public exhibition of that mutual love.

Booster has a long history of singing choirs, with material ranging from symphonic to barbershop styles. Kinney brings a focus on “almost current” songs, according to Hatcher. Hatcher herself enjoys lighthearted standards and will accompany herself admirably on the ukulele.

This friendly concert begins at 6 p.m. in Room 110 of the Sonoma Community Center, 276 E. Napa St. Tickets are available at the door.
