FARGO — The metro community is gathering this weekend for the annual Somali Heritage Celebration — a free event filled with cultural food, music, art, storytelling, dance and cultural connections.
This event will run from 4 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, in Broadway Square at 201 Broadway N.
Saturday’s event is more than a cultural celebration, according to Ahmed Makaraan, executive director of ESHARA.

Instead, this family friendly gathering is an opportunity for the entire community to learn from one another and learn more about different cultures, he said.
“This celebration isn’t just for the Somali community — it’s for all of us,” Makaraan said. “It’s a chance to come together, learn from one another, and celebrate the cultural diversity that makes Fargo-Moorhead stronger. “
Fargo Mayor Tim Mahoney will make a proclamation at 5 p.m. Saturday, according to a release from ESHARA, that recognizes Somali Heritage Day as well as the contributions that Somali Americans bring to the region.
The event will feature traditional performances of Somali music and dances, the release said, as well as authentic food, hands-on activities and a cultural display.
Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
