Fincastle Resolutions: Celebrating Pulaski County’s Legacy of Freedom

PULASKI COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – A slice of our nation’s freedom we celebrate on the Fourth of July was created in our hometowns and the Pulaski County Courthouses Exhibits Committee shared that legacy for the holiday.

250 years ago, America took one step closer to freedom, signing the Fincastle Resolutions. It was signed by representatives from all over the New River Valley in what’s now known as Wythe County, declaring their resistance to British Rule that helped lead to the American Revolution.

The document was the first-ever declaration by any American colonists threatening to fight and die for their freedoms.

“They sat down and said, you know, we are his Royal Majesty’s most loyal servants. However, we’re tired of this and we would fight to save our liberties. We inherited them from our ancestors and we planned to pass those freedoms and liberties on to others,” said Carol Amorosi.

Amorosi is an author and self-proclaimed amateur historian. She said those are the freedoms we now celebrate on Independence Day.

She shared that history as guest speaker at the Pulaski County Veterans Remembrance Ceremony at the Old Historic Courthouse, teaching veterans like James Ridpath something new about what he helped fight for.

“I’ve learned stuff today that I did not know,” said Ridpath. “It’s just an honor to be able to support our freedom and enjoy our freedom.”

April Martin with Pulaski County’s Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission said it’s history we should know and there’s no better time to start learning than the Fourth of July.

“It’s a nice time to interject these things that the locals know throughout all these places that are important to it,” explained Martin. “To just reinvigorate the knowledge, the sharing of education, the sharing of patriotism, the sharing of being a good citizen.”
