Former President Jimmy Carter hailed as ‘peacemaker and human rights champion’ by UN chief

The longest living president in US history, Jimmy Carter of the Democratic Party, served from 1977 to 1981. He enhanced his global reputation by winning the Nobel Peace Prize and creating the Carter Center, a prominent center for diplomacy and conflict resolution advocating for democracy and human rights worldwide.

After opting for hospice care at home due to an undisclosed illness and stopping medical treatment last year, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden paid tribute to Carter, praising him as an exceptional leader, statesman, and humanitarian.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres applauded Carter’s leadership during his term and his contributions to international peace and security, mentioning achievements like the Camp David Accords, SALT II Treaty, and the Panama Canal Treaties.

Post-presidency, Carter focused on tackling global issues like inequality, human rights, and housing shortages, earning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his efforts and co-founding The Elders group with Nelson Mandela to promote human rights and peace.

Guterres praised Carter for his commitment to peace and human rights, acknowledging his role in conflict mediation, election monitoring, democracy promotion, and disease prevention. He expressed condolences to the Carter family and the people of the United States, emphasizing Carter’s legacy as a peacemaker, human rights champion, and humanitarian.

Jimmy Carter is survived by his four children, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren, having lost his wife, Rosalynn, last year after 77 years of marriage.
