Four Arrested Following Break-In at Jefferson County Business

LAFARGEVILLE, New York (WWNY) – Surveillance video and tips helped the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office arrest 4 people in connection with a burglary at a LaFargeville business.

The following suspects were charged:

  • Gaige Cantatore, age 20, of the town of Orleans
  • Heather Bowes, age 35, of LaFargeville
  • Shawn Vantassel, age 18, of LaFargeville
  • An unnamed 16-year-old

The June 12 break-in at the LaFargeville Agway/True Value on Route 411 was caught on surveillance cameras.

The sheriff’s office says Cantatore and the 16-year-old broke into the business, caused $5,700 worth of damage and stole $1,400 worth of merchandise, including knives, BB guns and power tools. (The article continues below the photo.)

As for the other suspects, officials say Vantassel waited outside while Bowes drove the getaway car.

The surveillance video was posted on social media and officials say they received numerous tips from the community.

The tips and an investigation led the sheriff’s office to execute a search warrant at 36357 Route 180 in the town of Orleans, where Cantatore was living.

Officials say they were concerned firearms might be in the home, so the Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team (SERT) sent in first.

The sheriff’s office says some of the stolen merchandise was recovered.

Cantatore is charged with:

  • third-degree burglary
  • second-degree criminal mischief
  • fourth-degree grand larceny
  • fifth-degree conspiracy
  • four-degree criminal solicitation
  • endangering the welfare of a child

He’s being held in the county jail on $3,000 bail on court warrants from the county and the towns of Orleans and Alexandria.

The 16-year-old suspect was charged with third-degree burglary, fourth-degree grand larceny and fifth-degree conspiracy. The teen was arraigned in Jefferson County Family Court.

Vantassel and Bowes were charged with misdemeanors and released.
