Gemini can now detect when a PDF is being viewed on your phone’s screen

The latest update to the Files by Google app introduces a new feature where summoning Gemini while viewing a PDF allows users to inquire about the file, as noted by Android Police. This functionality is exclusive to Gemini Advanced subscribers, according to Mishaal Rahman who reported the rollout on Friday.

Users with this feature can now access an “Ask about this PDF” button when using Gemini while viewing a PDF in the Files app. This allows users to ask questions about the file similar to how they would ask ChatGPT about a PDF. Google initially unveiled this screen-aware feature at its I/O developer conference in May.

Rahman shared a screenshot demonstrating how it works in action:

Other context-aware features of Gemini include the ability to inquire about web pages and YouTube videos. For apps or file types without Gemini’s context-aware support, the assistant offers to answer questions about the screen by capturing a screenshot when the user selects “Ask about this screen.”
