Global Issues: UN Condemns Devastating Suicide Attack on Somalia Beach

The Al-Shabaab terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack that occurred late on Friday night (local time). The incident involved a suicide bombing followed by a gun battle between militants and security forces.

Reports indicate that at least 37 individuals lost their lives, with over 200 others sustaining injuries, some of which are critical.

The Secretary-General is saddened by the continued victimization of the people of Somalia through such heinous acts of terrorism,” stated Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN chief, in a message on Saturday.

The United Nations remains steadfast in its support of the Government and population of Somalia in their fight against terrorism and violent extremism,” Mr. Haq emphasized.

The UN mission in Somalia also censured the assault.

“Lido Beach is a beloved spot for Somalis to gather with loved ones, relish the beauty of the Somali shoreline, and spend time together. An attack on this location is utterly reprehensible and merits strong condemnation,” declared James Swan, Acting Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia, in a press release.

“As we stand in solidarity with all peace-loving Somalis in mourning this tragic loss, I reaffirm the United Nations’ commitment to supporting the Federal Government of Somalia in its quest for peace, security, and stability within the nation,” he added.

The attack on Friday night marks one of the deadliest incidents in the country since the October 2022 bombings in Mogadishu, which resulted in the deaths of over 120 individuals and injuries to more than 300.
