GM discloses actual reason for pausing Canadian production and cutting jobs, not due to Trump’s tariffs.

Canada’s subsidiary of General Motors announced on Friday that it will be temporarily stopping production and reducing staff at an assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario due to lower demand for its electric delivery vehicles.

GM Canada cited market demand and high inventory levels for the BrightDrop vehicle as the reasons for halting production at the CAMI Assembly for most of the spring and summer. The company clarified that this decision is not a result of the tariffs imposed by the United States on Canadian vehicle production.

Company spokesperson Jennifer Wright stated that GM Canada is making strategic adjustments to manage inventory and align production with current demand levels. The company is committed to continuing BrightDrop production at the CAMI plant and will provide support to employees during this transition.

Unifor, Canada’s largest private sector union, expressed concern over the impact of the production halt and staff reduction on union members, their families, and the Ingersoll community. The union reported that the plant will be idle until October, followed by a single shift operation resulting in the indefinite layoff of approximately 500 workers.
