Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated on Thursday that her government was considering whether to pursue legal action against Google for rebranding the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America on Google Maps.
“We are evaluating our options. We are currently assessing the legal implications of this decision, but we hope that Google will reconsider,” Sheinbaum mentioned, as reported by Reuters.

Google changed the name of the body of water following President Donald Trump’s executive order. Currently, users in the United States will see “Gulf of America” on the app, while users outside the U.S. and Mexico will see both terms, the company confirmed.
“We’re planning to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which we believe has a nice ring to it. It encompasses a vast area,” Trump remarked on Tuesday. “The Gulf of America. Such a lovely name. And it’s fitting.”
Sheinbaum criticized the decision, arguing that the name Gulf of Mexico has been internationally recognized for a long time.
“We simply ask Google to review the decree issued by the White House and signed by President Donald Trump. Upon reviewing that decree, you’ll notice it does not encompass the entire gulf,” Sheinbaum stated.

“If necessary, we will file a civil suit,” she added. “Our legal team is currently looking into the potential implications, but we are hopeful that Google will reconsider.”
Aside from Google, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a charting notice confirming the ongoing updates to reflect the new name, as well as the renaming of Mount McKinley in Alaska to its former name, Denali.
