Google fabricated a Gemini AI response in its Super Bowl advertisement

As we wait for the start of Super Bowl LIX, a Google commercial set to air during the game has faced criticism once again.

In a Super Bowl commercial supposedly showcasing its Gemini AI chatbot, Google was accused of faking the AI component, according to The Verge. The ad features a business called Wisconsin Cheese Mart using Gemini to create a product description for gouda, but the paragraph describing gouda in the commercial was simply copied from Wisconsin Cheese Mart’s website, as shown on the Wayback Machine dating back to 2020:

Mashable Light Speed

“Gouda is a Dutch cheese named after the city of Gouda in the Netherlands. It is one of the most popular cheeses in the world, accounting for 50 to 60 percent of the world’s cheese consumption. Smoked Gouda is a variant of this famous cheese, smoked in brick ovens over flaming hickory chip embers. This sweet curd is similar to Edam except that it contains more milk fat, which gives it a creamier texture and causes it to become more buttery with age. Sensational with beer, this cows milk cheese has an edible, smokey brown rind and a creamy, yellow interior.”

The text attributed to Gemini was actually written years before Gemini even existed, and the only original contribution by Gemini in the commercial turned out to be false, as it inaccurately claimed gouda was the most widely consumed cheese in the world.

It seems there should be a more authentic way to promote generative AI than this.
