Google Gemini integration with Apple Intelligence on the horizon

Apple’s plans to incorporate Google Gemini into Apple Intelligence are progressing well, as revealed by backend iOS code. An analysis by 9To5Mac analyst Aaron Perris of the iOS 18.4 beta update uncovered references to “Google” alongside “OpenAI” and “Third Party Model.” This indicates that Google’s AI model Gemini may soon become another option for Apple users, in addition to ChatGPT.

This discovery was not entirely surprising, considering the previous announcement of Apple Intelligence at WWDC 2024. Software executive Craig Federighi confirmed rumors of a collaboration between Apple and Google, stating, “We’re looking forward to doing integrations with other models, including Google Gemini, for instance, in the future.”

After partnering with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT to Apple Intelligence as a third-party option for Siri and other AI functions, Apple emphasized its intention to offer users a choice of multiple models. While no specific timeline was shared at the time, this leak indicates that the integration of Google Gemini is on the horizon.

As pointed out by 9To5Mac, while Google Gemini might not be included in the iOS 18.4 update, Apple is actively working on it. The launch of Apple Intelligence has faced challenges, such as delayed rollout, underwhelming features, and inaccuracies in AI-generated summaries. Users are eagerly anticipating the promised improved version of Siri in the upcoming iOS 18.4 release.

Comparatively, Samsung has been more proactive in deploying AI features for its Galaxy series and has already integrated Google Gemini. It remains to be seen how Apple will incorporate Gemini, but it could help the company catch up with its competitors and address some of its deficiencies in the voice assistant realm. Additionally, Apple is reportedly developing its own LLM for iOS 19 and macOS 16, expected to be unveiled at this year’s WWDC.
