Google Home experiments with different access levels for all members of your smart home

A new feature being tested by Google Home will allow friends and family members to help manage smart devices in your home. There are two access levels available: “Admin” which provides full control over account and device permissions, and “Member” for those who need more limited access.

Google states that Admin access is for “trusted partners or co-managers of the home.” Admins can add, remove, and manage users, add and remove devices, and link subscriptions to the home account. Members can control basic device functions such as viewing live security camera feeds and adjusting personal settings like voice and face match assistant features.

For Members, there are two additional permission tiers: “Settings” to fully control devices and home-wide settings like automation and Nest Wifi device network features; and “Activity” to authorize access to device and home-wide history for devices such as cameras, locks, and sensors.

To add someone as an Admin or Member, participants can go to the Google Home app settings, tap “Household and access,” and select the plus icon to invite a new home member. Invited individuals do not need to be enrolled in public preview, but must have the latest Google Home app version installed.
