Google is currently in a legal battle with a part of the United States government.
More specifically, Google is suing the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, as reported by Reuters. This action came about after the federal agency ordered supervision of Google Payment, which is responsible for handling user payments. The CFPB raised concerns about potential risks for consumers, such as fraud and erroneous transactions.

One significant point to consider is that Google had actually discontinued Google Pay earlier in the year. This plays a key role in Google’s defense argument, stating that a non-existent product cannot pose any risks. Therefore, Google opposes the need for supervision (similar to what major banks and financial institutions undergo).
Despite Google’s stance, the CFPB continues to believe that Google Payment services could potentially jeopardize customers, according to TechCrunch. The CFPB is acting based on nearly 300 customer complaints. While Google may not have committed any wrongdoing, the CFPB sees enough cause for supervision, leading to a disagreement with Google.
It’s worth mentioning that this entire situation may change following the return of Donald Trump to office in January, considering his administration’s positive relationship with major tech industry figures.
