Google Maps is cracking down on fake business reviews.

Businesses are attempting to manipulate Google Maps by posting fake reviews, and Google is taking action.

Google has started limiting the profiles of businesses that have been identified as hosting fake reviews. On its support website, Google outlined the consequences for such businesses. Some of the possible penalties include:

Mashable Light Speed

  • Businesses may be unable to receive new reviews for a specified period

  • Existing reviews may be removed for a period of time

  • Business profiles will indicate a history of hosting fake reviews

Google initially implemented these measures in the UK earlier this year, but they are now reportedly global, according to The Verge. However, there have been no confirmed reports of such warnings in the U.S. at this time.

Given the popularity of Google Maps and its frequent use for finding local businesses, it is not unexpected for businesses to try to manipulate the review system. However, fake reviews can undermine trust in the platform, making it important for Google to take action against them.
