CHICAGO – Gov. Gavin Newsom shared that since Vice President Kamala Harris took over as the top of the Democratic Party’s 2024 ticket from President Biden, there has been an influx of support.
Harris has been experiencing a surge in polling and fundraising following Biden’s decision to not seek re-election for a second term due to concerns about his physical and mental abilities.
Biden’s lackluster performance against former President Trump in their late June debate raised doubts about his capabilities, prompting calls from within his party to end his 2024 campaign.

Biden eventually gave in to the pressure and suspended his re-election campaign three days after the Republican National Convention, where Trump and Ohio Sen. JD Vance formed the GOP ticket.
Newsom, previously a top surrogate for Biden, had been supportive of the president until he dropped out of the race.

When asked if he would show the same support for Harris as he did for Biden, Newsom emphasized his long-standing friendship and collaboration with the vice president, both being from California.
“We’ve known each other for a decade before entering politics. One of my closest friends. It’s an easy decision,” Newsom told Fox News Digital on the first night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
“The difference now is that I’m offering a solution to a problem. There’s a lot of support for Harris now. So, I’m here to help as needed. I’m fully committed,” Newsom stated.

However, considering his own national aspirations, Newsom mentioned that he may not be requested to campaign for Harris as there are many others doing so.
“We’ll wait and see because everyone is actively involved. Everyone is contributing,” the governor explained.
Reflecting on his campaign efforts for Biden and the current situation, Newsom commented, “You were with me in New Hampshire. There weren’t many of us. The dynamic is very different now. Everyone is actively involved in supporting Kamala.”
“There’s a sense of competition to be out on the campaign trail,” he added.
