During a high school basketball game in Oklahoma, a critical moment arose that led to teamwork and compassion. Randy Vitales, a 16-year-old player, went into cardiac arrest at the start of the game on Jan. 9, and Magnus Miller acted swiftly to assist him.
As reported by KOCO-5, Dover High School was facing off against Life Christian Academy in Orlando, Oklahoma, when Vitales collapsed just three minutes into the game. Dover coaches quickly realized Vitales had no pulse, according to King Fisher Press.
Miller, who had received lifeguard training, used an automated external defibrillator and performed CPR to help Vitales. He played a crucial role in keeping Vitales stable.

The Guthrie Fire Department praised Miller for his quick actions, stating to KOCO-5 that the student-athlete undoubtedly saved his opponent’s life.
Miller expressed that he acted without hesitation when faced with the emergency.
“I didn’t have any second thoughts about it,” the 18-year-old shared with the news outlet. “I just jumped in and took control.”
Despite being hailed as a lifesaver, Miller humbly accepted the praise.
“It’s weird hearing someone say you saved their life,” Miller remarked. “But it wasn’t really me. It was God just being there for me and him. Obviously, I didn’t go there to play basketball that day.”

Vitales was taken to an Oklahoma City hospital by Dover Public Schools and eventually placed in the ICU. Doctors later determined that an abnormal heartbeat led to his cardiac arrest.
“Randy is undergoing several tests and will be moved to ICU,” a statement from Jan. 9 indicated. “Doctors did say that the quick response by our coaches and the training they received is probably what saved his life. Counselors and some area pastors were at the school when our teams returned to talk and pray with our students.”
As of Jan. 11, Vitales was reported to be breathing without the need for a ventilator, as per The Oklahoman.
