A large fire caused extensive damage to a Hingham sports complex Thursday night, officials said.

Hingham firefighters responded to a smoke detector activation at the South Shore Sports Complex around 11 p.m. and immediately upgraded it to a two-alarm fire upon seeing the heavy smoke and flames across the roof, said David Levenson, deputy fire chief of operations.

The complex was locked before personnel arrived, but firefighters made sure no one was in the building before attempting to fight the flames. Levenson said the fire quickly progressed to four alarms and that there was an issue with the water supply that required additional help.

The crew, made up of more than 50 firefighters from 10 different communities, switched between fighting the flames from inside to outside the building for six hours, Levenson said.

A substantial portion of the roof collapsed, causing damage to the lounge, kitchen, and office area on the second floor. The rest of the building sustained heavy smoke damage.

Levenson said the cause of the fire is still unknown and the investigation cannot be conducted given the building’s unsafe conditions. No injuries were reported.
