On this date in 1974, a Cass County weed-spraying truck accidentally rolled into the Red River and was retrieved four hours later with the help of a wrecker and a scuba diver.
Here is the complete story as it appeared in the paper that day:
Perhaps taking a cue from the hot weather, a Cass County weed spraying truck slipped into the Red River about 9 a.m. Tuesday while its driver, Rick Myhra, was busy in the nearby Fargo Foundry.
Myhra, thinking he had parked the vehicle in gear, was in the Foundry only a few minutes when someone came in and told him the truck had taken a dive. A dragline service, armed with a wrecker, chains and a YMCA scuba diver, visible near the cab of the vehicle, managed to coax the machine from its leisurely soak after four hours.
