A budget bill was passed in the US House of Representatives to fund the government through mid-March, avoiding a shutdown.
The bill now moves to the Senate to prevent a shutdown scheduled for Saturday at 12:01am local time (05:01 GMT).
It received overwhelming support in the House with 366 votes in favor and only 34 against.
The bill did not address the debt ceiling issue that caused recent negotiations to stall.
President-elect Donald Trump opposed the bill due to the absence of debt ceiling provisions.
He threatened to challenge any Republican who opposed his plan to deal with the debt ceiling under the Biden administration.
Trump’s opposition to the bill conflicted with House Speaker Mike Johnson’s support for it.
After failed attempts to pass a bipartisan bill, negotiations led to the bill’s approval with Democratic support.
Johnson hailed the bill as aligned with Trump’s economic platform and hinted at changes in the upcoming Congress.
The bill includes funds for farm aid and disaster relief, with $10bn allocated to the former and $100bn to the latter.
Elon Musk, a Trump ally, praised Speaker Johnson for his efforts in simplifying the bill after its passage.
Musk’s growing influence within the Republican Party raised concerns among Democrats.
Despite internal dissent, Democrats played a crucial role in passing the bill and keeping the government running.
Representative Jared Moskowitz credited Democrats for securing the majority needed to pass the bill and serve the American people.
