Hyde’s New Brewery: Celebrating Heritage in a Historic Building

HYDE, Mich. (WLUC) – Unique features of a new brewery in Hyde include a pipe organ, pews and a baptismal font.

That’s because the old Lutheran church at 5133 I Road is now The Church Brewery.

There are 12 craft beers on tap with names that give a nod to the building’s history, including St. Paul’s Porter, Ale-eluia amber ale and a light lager called Holy Wah-Ter.

Visitors can also try the brewery’s house-made wines, play games and after this weekend, taste test a new menu item — hard cider.

Larger parties can rent out the upstairs space or the whole brewery. And in the next few weeks, the brewery will open its fenced outdoor area with umbrella-shaded picnic tables.

Owner Sarah Nault says mingling the old with the new was personal for her.

“My grandparents were married here, my parents were married here and myself,” Nault said. “I just really wanted to keep the nostalgia of it and it’s obviously beautiful as it is. So, we just had to tweak it a little bit.”

But Nault says what she didn’t ‘tweak’ was the outdoor sign. It’s the last message the former church put out for its congregation:

‘Running low on faith? Drop in for a fill-up!’

“We felt that was a sign that a brewery was the right choice for the location,” the new brewery owner added.
