William Cuffay and the London Chartists by Red Saunders

A brilliant exhibition of works by the artist and photographer Red Saunders is open now.

Saunders uses photographic tableaux to reproduce important historical scenes involving the dissenters, radicals and revolutionaries who have so often been hidden from the very history they made.

The exhibition covers such subjects as the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381, the Women Levellers’ Movement of 1647, the Peterloo Massacre of 1819 and an 1842 meeting of the London Chartists.

Saunders shines photographic light on great moments in the long struggle of working people for democracy and social justice.

  • History from Below: An exhibition of radical photographic tableaux from Red Saunders, The Cut, Halesworth, Suffolk, IP19 8BY until 8 August 2025
