Improved battery life is the primary concern for smartphone users, not AI capabilities.

Apple’s latest software update, iOS 18, introduced a wide range of artificial intelligence features known as Apple Intelligence. Gemini Live can now be accessed on Android devices, Lenovo has developed an AI-powered laptop, and Google is heavily incorporating AI into its search results and phones.

If you’ve recently observed the influx of AI features in phone updates and felt indifferent towards them, you’re not alone. According to a survey conducted by CNET and YouGov with 2,484 adult participants, including 2,387 smartphone users, it appears that individuals are not particularly enthusiastic about AI features on their phones.

Approximately 25% of smartphone users stated that they do not find AI features useful at all, while about half expressed disinterest in paying for AI capabilities through a subscription. Additionally, around a third of respondents highlighted privacy concerns related to AI on their phones.

Preferences regarding AI features on smartphones vary by generation, with younger individuals exhibiting more comfort and willingness to invest in AI compared to older users. Overall, AI ranks low on the list of reasons consumers consider when upgrading their smartphones.

What actually drives smartphone users to upgrade? Unsurprisingly, it’s battery life. Nearly two-thirds of respondents indicated that longer battery life is the primary motivator for an upgrade, followed by increased storage capacity and enhanced camera features. Only 18% of respondents cited AI integrations as a motivating factor.

Regardless of the reason for upgrading, it seems prudent to wait for advancements in AI, given the rapid pace at which it is evolving.
