On Thursday, OpenAI released a $200-a-month chatbot, and the AI community was unsure about its value.
The company’s new ChatGPT Pro plan includes “o1 pro mode,” which uses more computing power for better answers to complex questions. This upgraded version of OpenAI’s reasoning model should provide more reliable and comprehensive responses to science, math, and coding queries, according to OpenAI.
Immediately, users began testing the chatbot by requesting it to draw unicorns, design a “crab-based” computer, and ponder the meaning of life.
I asked ChatGPT o1 Pro Mode to create an SVG of a unicorn.

Many skeptics questioned whether the o1 pro mode’s answers justified its high price tag.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman clarified that ChatGPT Pro, specifically the o1 pro mode, is not intended for most users and recommended sticking with the free or Plus tier for more typical needs.
It seems that the target audience for o1 pro mode is experts in specialized fields. OpenAI plans to offer free access to a select group of medical researchers at top institutions to utilize the capabilities of ChatGPT Pro, including o1 pro mode.
The $200 monthly subscription raises expectations, but initial feedback suggests that the ChatGPT Pro may not meet all users’ needs.
