Jerry Jones believes Former Cowboy Jason Witten has the potential to be a top NFL coach

The Dallas Cowboys are currently 3-6 and there is speculation that they might part ways with head coach Mike McCarthy after this season. If this scenario unfolds, could the team consider a former player to take over?

Owner Jerry Jones believes retired All-Pro tight end Jason Witten has the potential to be a successful NFL head coach, drawing comparisons to Dan Campbell, another former tight end turned head coach.

“Without hesitation, yes,” Jones stated when asked about Witten’s coaching potential. “He possesses an innate understanding of the game that is invaluable. He reminds me of our other tight end who is currently a head coach in Detroit.”

Jones continued, “Jason truly comprehends the physical and mental aspects of football. His work ethic and football IQ make him a prime candidate to excel as a coach.”

Witten had a successful 16-season career with the Cowboys, showcasing his skills as an elite tight end. He retired in 2017 but returned briefly before retiring once again in 2020 after a stint with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Since 2021, Witten has been coaching at Argyle Liberty Christian High School, where he mentors his two sons.

Comparing Jones’ comments, Campbell’s Lions currently lead the NFC with an 8-1 record in his fourth season as head coach. The Lions defeated the Cowboys decisively in Week 6. Campbell previously served as interim head coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2015.

Both Campbell and Witten were third-round draft picks who played for the Cowboys. Campbell had stints with the Giants and Lions in addition to the Cowboys.
